What do you think Whitman meant when he wrote “I sing the body electric?”?
The next line is: “The armies of those I love engirth me, and I engirth them…”
The poem seems to be praising the human body, both male and female, but I never got what Whitman meant when he said “I sing the body ELECTRIC…”
Could someone enlighten me? Thank you.

Whitman is alluding to the inter-connectedness of all people. That’s the significance of the secong line. He is likening humanity to a large electrical device with many different, though interconnected parts, all operating together.
This poem is a hymn to the idea of the “one-ness” of humanity. suffused and animated by the “spark” of life. I’ve always loved that line, I think it’s one of the most beutiful single lines of poetry ever written. It’s so powerful and beautiful — no wonder it inspired Ray Bradbury to use it as a title to one of his best short stories.
